Sam supplies hardwood, softwood, dyed, composted and specialty mulches. Coarse hardwood lasts longest and suits tree root zones and pathways. Finer composted material breaks down faster and feeds garden beds and vegetable patches. The best choice depends on your soil, plants and how the area is used, and Sam gives a personalised recommendation rather than guessing.
As a general rule, a layer 5 to 10cm deep is right for most garden beds and tree root zones. Too thick, and mulch piled against a trunk can actually cause rot. Sam applies it correctly, not just thickly.
It significantly reduces weed growth by blocking light to weed seeds, but windborne seed will still germinate on the surface. Combining mulch with a landscape fabric weed barrier gives the strongest long-term control in beds you don’t dig regularly.

Yes, as a surface mulch around established trees and beds. Just don’t dig it into planting soil. Decomposing fresh wood chip temporarily draws nitrogen out of the soil and will hold back new plantings.

Mulch itself isn’t a significant termite attractant, but no timber material should be piled against a house or in contact with structural timbers. Keep mulch clear of the building perimeter and weep holes.
