Crown reduction achieves what most people want from lopping, properly. Instead of cutting through stems at an arbitrary height, each branch is cut back to a suitable lateral branch large enough to take over as the new leader, generally at least a third of the diameter of the limb removed.

Sam runs a proper health and safety assessment first. Trees that are dead, diseased, structurally unsound or genuinely hazardous typically need removal. Healthy trees needing shape correction or disease prevention usually suit pruning. Lopping is reserved for cases where height or spread genuinely needs reducing for clearance. Sam will always give an honest recommendation, including telling you if no work is needed at all.
It can be, if done incorrectly or too often. Heavy repeated lopping stresses trees, encourages weak regrowth attached only to outer wood, and shortens a tree’s lifespan. Done selectively, by an arborist who understands the species and the tree’s condition, it’s a legitimate tool for specific clearance problems. That’s exactly why Sam assesses each tree rather than lopping by default.
As a general rule, no more than around 25% of live canopy in a single season. Taking more forces the tree into stressed regrowth and can trigger decline, particularly in older trees.
Ideally not on a cycle at all. Lopping is meant for a specific clearance or size problem, not ongoing maintenance. If a tree needs regular size control, that’s usually a sign it’s the wrong species for the space, and removal plus replanting something appropriately sized is often the better long-term answer.
